The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are here...
The spirit of the Olympics is alive. It is said that Athens 2004 was a place where people were free to light up bonfires on the nearby beaches. A celebration of the longest global economic expansion, freedom and getting together of nationalities from all kinds of places in an almost lawless country.
Nobody expects Beijing to be another Athens. It will be very different. We have the lingering issue of Tibet. We have already seen heavy traffic restrictions and a crackdown on big polluters. Western Press coverage will be limited and allowed only under the close supervision of the omni-present communist censorship regime. Even street vendors will have to get prior approval and street performers have their lyrics audited by the state. Greece was the smallest nation that has ever hosted the Olympics. China will be the most populus. A recent economic powerhouse; a country that resembles the Wild Wild West more than Karl Marx's dreams, yet with a solid repressive regime in place.
The contradictions are endless. But that's the whole spirit of the Olympic Games! Nations, with very differnet backgrounds, ideals, ideas & belief systems, getting together for common understanding of each other's living under the auspices of athleticism. This is the only way we may bridge our differences and one day stop killing each other in various kind of unessecary wars...
